Arterial Blockages
What are Arterial Blockages?
Arterial occlusions are narrowings or blockages in the arteries (the large vessels that carry blood throughout the body). This can obstruct blood flow, making it difficult for the tissues to receive adequate oxygen and nutrients.
What are the Symptoms / Causes?
Symptoms of arterial occlusions can vary depending on the location of the blockage and the size of the artery. These may include pain or increased pain, numbness, coldness, color changes, and loss of function. Diagnosis can be made by a doctor using a physical examination, imaging tests (e.g., Doppler ultrasound or angiography), and blood tests, depending on the location of the blockage.
Arterial blockages can have many causes. The most common causes include atherosclerosis (plaque buildup in the arteries), inflammation of the arteries, trauma to the arteries, weakness of the artery walls, and certain medical conditions.
Treatment Methods
Treatment for arterial blockages depends on the cause, location, and overall health of the patient. Treatment options may include medications (such as blood thinners, cholesterol medications), angioplasty (a procedure to remove the blockage), stent placement, bypass surgery, and endarterectomy (a procedure to remove plaque).
