What is Aortic Dissection?

Aortic dissection is a medical emergency caused by the tearing of the inner layers of the aortic wall. This tear causes blood to leak into the vessel wall, creating a gap between the layers. This disrupts the vessel's normal structure and can affect blood flow to vital organs.

What are the Symptoms / Causes?

Aortic dissection may present with sudden and severe chest or back pain. Symptoms such as shortness of breath, fainting, sweating, and irregular heartbeat may also occur. Diagnosis is usually based on clinical findings, imaging tests (e.g., CT scan or magnetic resonance imaging), and blood tests.

The primary cause of aortic dissection is usually a weakness of the aortic wall. This weakness can be caused by factors such as hypertension, aortic aneurysm, genetic disorders, or trauma.

Treatment Methods

Aortic dissection is an emergency and requires rapid intervention. Treatment aims to control blood pressure, restore blood flow, and reduce the risk of complications. Surgery may include repairing or replacing the torn section of the artery. Medications to lower blood pressure and control pain are also important.
